Review: For the Night by Chlöe & Latto

By Imani Patterson

Chlöe teams up with Latto for their new song, “For the Night”. In this sultry song, Chlöe and Latto sing about wanting a serious, committed relationship with a man who's afraid of commitment.

In the opening chorus, Chlöe sings, “I ask myself why we can’t be closer. I play those same games a thousand times over, and you crave those long nights with me, oh don’t you? You can leave your guard at the door and let me love you for the night.”

Chlöe ponders on how she and the man she’s with aren’t in a serious relationship yet. In the first verse, she sings about how she likes that he’s rough around the edges and how she loves all the time they spend together. Chlöe also explains how “they” don’t get the relationship she has with her man, but their opinions don’t matter. As long as Chlöe herself is satisfied in the relationship, nothing else matters. Chlöe’s man treats her right when they’re together; “Love when you call me “Baby,” Make me feel like a lady.”

In the second verse of the song, Chlöe explains how she’s better than all the other girls her man is around. She emphasizes that she’s more than a one-night stand and could be a ride-or-die woman for him. “You can have the world or you can have L.A. I’ma give it to you and I don't hesitate.” Even though she wants him to commit to her, she won’t be waiting long for him to make up his mind. “You say you promise and promise, you'll figure it out. But I can not wait, you're teasing me, I back down.”

Latto’s verse on “For the Night” adds additional perspective and a southern flair. She emphasizes that the people that hang out with her man only love him at his best and aren’t there for him when he’s at his worst. “That don't mean you good, they only love you at your best. You know where to come and crash when your life a wreck.” At the end of her verse, Latto states that she’s the only person that knows everything about him, and it’s up to him whether he wants her in his life for a night or life.

The production of “For the Night” is intricate and delicate. From the acoustic intro, to the chorus, where violins are introduced, and the beautiful violin outro. Chlöe’s soft vocals combined with Latto’s bold but seductive vocals make them a dynamic duo. “For the Night” isn’t your typical R&B song, and we love how all aspects of this song are showcased.
